You can walk a short distance from the cabin to the Cockram Mill Complex, where the Crooked Road Cafe is known for its excellent food and live entertainment. Grab lunch and a cold drink at the cafe, and sit on the back deck overlooking the river. Also located at the Cockram Mill Complex is an antique/ consignment/ ice cream shop. On the grounds of the cabin itself, are acres of fields and gravel roads to walk, run, bike, and walk your dogs.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than two miles away from the cabin. Lovers Leap is on Jeb Stuart Highway, only a couple of miles away, and has some of the most picturesque views around. There are several antique shops, country stores, and farmers markets in the area. Mabry Mill is the most photographed landmark on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is just a few miles away. The mill still grinds flour more than a century since its original construction. Near Mabry Mill, you can also see the Matthews Cabin, blacksmith shop and interpretive area, as well as demonstrations on blacksmithing, carding, spinning, basket making and other traditional Appalachian crafts.
Local wineries including Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalaccia are an easy drive, just a few miles away. Just a little longer drive brings you to local meaderies and cideries. FloydFest, held annually near Villa Appalaccia, is an event not to be missed. In the town of Floyd, grab a micro-brew, a fresh cup of coffee, visit the country stores and listen to live Bluegrass music.
There's lots to do outdoors, including hiking the trails at Rocky Knob/Rock Castle Gorge, Fairy Stone State Park, and climbing Buffalo Mountain. The Rocky Knob recreation area covers more than 4000 acres. Four trails offer a variety of scenic and historical wonders. The Rock Castle Gorge trail descends over three miles into the back-country camping area in the bottom of the gorge. The strenuous and rugged nature of the trail reveal part of the reason this pathway was given National Recreational Trail status. Fish for trout, small mouth bass, and panfish at locations including the Dan River (near the cabin), at Fairy Stone State Park, or on the Little River which is an easy drive from the cabin.
